YS ?Introductory Day? West Kent Shooting School – 6th June 2012

The South East region held a young shots introductory day in June at the West Kent Shooting School, Paddock Wood, Kent.

Eighteen children participated in the event, with ages ranging from eight to sixteen years of age. The day started in the schools club house where a safety talk was given by John Farley and Paul Smart, who were the two BASC accredited shotgun coaches for the day. Following on from the safety briefing came a very informative talk on firearms by Alan Wey of Alan D Wey & Co, Gun and Rifle Makers. Alan brought along a selection of rifles of varying calibres and age’s. On display were firearms dating back to the 1900’s, through to the modern synthetic and stainless steel types now used in the 21st century.

After both talks came the start of the activities with children having the chance of shooting at clay pigeons under the guidance of both John and Paul, whilst Dan Reynolds and Alan Wey supervised the air rifle range. Samantha Edwards, BASC’s political affairs officer, was also on hand to pass on her knowledge of fly fishing with all attendee’s getting the chance to practice their fly fishing skills.

The event enjoyed some excellent weather and finally concluded at around 4.00pm. Our thanks must go to both Michael and Gillian Lynch for allowing us to use their excellent facilities.

Following on from this event will be a YS ‘progression day’ at The West Kent Shooting School on the 21st August 2012, of which details can be found under the South East diary section of the website.
