YS ‘Introductory Day’ Plumpton – 7th August 2012

By popular demand, BASC South East held their second ‘impromptu’ young shots day at Plumpton agriculture college, Plumpton, East Sussex on 7th August 2012.

On having to limit the amount of places available on their first YS day at Plumpton some two weeks earlier, the South East team organised this second event to ensure that every child had a chance to attend. This time the weather was much cooler than the previous day, making for ideal conditions.

The children enjoyed five activities throughout the day. BASC accredited shotgun coaches Colin Gardner and Paul Smart were on hand to supervise the clay pigeon shooting; Where once again natural talent seemed to be abound, with many of the attendee’s scoring very well indeed. Sam Edwards, BASC political affairs officer gave instruction on fly fishing and casting, and BASC accredited air rifle coaches Dave Elkins and Stephen Barnes over sore some great shooting on the rifle range.

We were very fortunate to have Mr Donald Mockford, joint master of the Wealden district mink hounds present. Don brought along a selection of hounds and gave a talk on the North American mink, and spoke about why the animal has to be controlled, together with the legal methods used. The Sussex ferret welfare trust was also on hand to talk about ferrets and their role in controlling rabbit numbers in the British countryside, as well as their welfare and housing.

BASC South East would like to thank all of the helpers and coaches that supported this event at such short notice. The day was extremely well received by all those attending, and this would not have been possible without their support.

Once again, BASC South East would like to thank Plumpton Agriculture College for allowing us to use their facilities. Details of the various course’s run by the college can be located by visiting the regional page of our website, and clicking onto the college link.
