Over 150 children from North Wales got to find out more about countryside activities such as falconry, fishing and shooting at a special schools event held on the Gwaenynog estate in Denbighshire last week.
The children from primary schools in Rhyl, Trelogan and Denbigh enjoyed learning about the work of a gamekeeper, watching gundog, falconry and ferreting demonstrations as well as a visit to the estate’s dairy farm. The children also visited the estate garden which was the inspiration for Beatrix Potter and they also tried venison sausages provided by Willo Game.
The event was organised by retired school inspector Bruce Weston and the Gwaenynog estate gamekeeper Harold Jones. They are both members of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation’s (BASC) North Wales committee.
Bruce said: “The day would not be possible without the people who provide the demonstrations and activities. Pupils learn that the countryside is not an environment created by nature alone. It has, is and will be shaped and formed by human activities and the demonstrations emphasise the fundamental link between country sports and conservation.”
