The Wildlife Habitat Charitable Trust (WHCT) has appealed for more people to donate money so it can continue to award grants.
The WHCT trustees have had to put all grants on hold until June 2010 following successful applications for pond and habitat improvement in East Anglia and a flyway project in Lithuania. These important grants have left the Trust temporarily short of funds.
Tim Russell, secretary to the WHCT, said: “We need more financial support so we can continue making grants to improve habitats and the wildlife that depend on them. A good example is the recent grant for restoration of open natural floodplain habitats on part of the Nemunas river delta in Lithuania. The Nemunas delta is an important stopover site for migratory waterfowl that visit the UK each year, so this project will be of direct benefit to wildfowlers in the UK. Without an increase in income these important projects will not happen.”
Trustees have also recently agreed that there will be a new policy for making grants. In future, trustees will decide how much money can be made available for grants and then all applications will be judged against each other.
