Gamekeepers, shoot beaters and pickers-up from across the UK are counting down to one of the highlights of the gundog calendar – Crufts 2010 – where they will be showing their working dogs in the gamekeeping classes.
The event’s gundog day will be held on 14th March at the NEC in Birmingham. The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) will host three rings for working dogs, sponsored by Chudleys dog food, and people will be able to watch dogs working in retrieval demonstrations.
BASC’s gamekeeping and picking-up classes provide a showcase for working gundogs at the world’s largest dog show.
The winners of the gamekeeper classes throughout the day will go head to head in a final show in the main arena for the Northesk memorial trophy.
Tom Blades, BASC’s head of game and gamekeeping, said gamekeepers would travel from across the UK to take part in the event.
He said: “The gundog day at Crufts provides an opportunity for gamekeepers to show their dogs. Gundogs are essential in the field and work extremely hard throughout the shooting season. Crufts gives them a chance to demonstrate their skills. It also gives gamekeepers and pickers-up a chance to get together and network.”
