A group of wildfowlers has helped to clear up huge amounts of litter from a stretch of coastal path. Twenty members of the Morecambe Bay Wildfowlers Association spent a day clearing glass, broken bottles and metal from a two mile stretch of the Lancashire Coastal Path at Aldcliffe, near Lancaster. Several wheelbarrow loads of glass bottles and other hazardous and unsightly waste were taken away from the popular footpath and recycled.
John Eves, the club’s membership secretary, said members had seen that the area was strewn with litter and had decided to organise a volunteer work party to do something about it for the benefit of the community.
He said: “Glass, especially broken glass, should not be lying around in the countryside. The wildfowlers and their families, who carried out the clean-up, can be proud that they have removed a dangerous hazard to wildlife, sheep, dogs and humans.”
The Morecambe Bay Wildfowlers Association is affiliated to the UK’s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC).
Mark Greenhough, BASC’s wildfowling officer, said: “We are pleased that the Morecambe Bay Wildfowlers Association decided to take action to improve this stretch of path not only for their own benefit but also for the benefit and enjoyment of the wider community.”
