BASC has joined other rural groups in praising the role of gamekeepers in helping to tackle the large wildfire on Saddleworth Moor.
The blaze started at the weekend and now covers almost four miles of moorland.
Gamekeepers from the area have joined farmers and other members of the local community in helping fire crews to deal with the fire. Keepers have also been using specialist fire-fighting equipment from their estates as part of the operation to control the fire.
BASC north director Duncan Thomas said: “It is commendable to see gamekeepers working tirelessly with farmers and others from the community in helping the fire service, who are working so courageously to try to put out the fire in very difficult circumstances.
“It is right that the immediate focus of everybody up on Saddleworth Moor at the moment is around bringing the fire under control as quickly and safely as possible.
“But this fire also serves as a reminder that prolonged, dry weather poses a real risk in upland areas. Those with access to moorland areas have a responsibility to understand what they can do to prevent fires starting and to act accordingly.”
