New insurance launched to cover bird flu

As winter approaches and migratory birds return to the UK, the prospect of renewed outbreaks of avian influenza becomes a threat to shoots and estates.

BASC, working with AIM Risk Services, previously launched shoot cancellation cover which included a package of protection against bad weather, anti-fieldsports demonstrators, vandalism to pens and equipment, and also cancellation due to bird ‘flu.

AIM Risk Services are now also able to provide ‘stand-alone’ insurance to shoots and estates for shoot cancellation due to bird ‘flu. This allow for the refund of fees and recovery of costs associated with any shoots which are cancelled due to an outbreak.

David Ilsley, BASC head of marketing and membership services, said: “Looking further ahead, many shoots are now starting to plan their budgets for the 2018–19 season and may want to factor the cost of avian influenza cover into next season’s pricing.

“It is especially useful as the insurance will also cover the risk that poults can’t be delivered, have to be slaughtered or can’t be released as a result of an outbreak at the shoot’s location.”

AIM are also able to provide cover for other pathogens which could restrict access or result in shoot cancellation, such as foot and mouth disease.

David added: “Shoots buy insurance cover for their property and liabilities as a matter of course. The potential for having a season disrupted by bird ‘flu is very real, and could have just as big an impact on the bottom line, or a shoot’s reputation if fees can’t be refunded.

“It makes sound business sense to investigate how insurance can provide protection and peace of mind.”
