European firearms infographic published by BASC

BASC-Commission-Report-InfographictnBASC, the UK’s largest shooting organisation, has published a new infographic highlighting the unintended consequences that could result in the UK from the European Commission’s proposed amendments to the European Firearms Directive. Copies have been provided to all UK MEPs.

Among the unintended consequences are:

· Damage to training in the safe and responsible use of firearms

· The blocking of moves to improve public safety

· Reducing pest control with implications for the environment and food prices

· The destruction of world famous collections of firearms

Richard Ali, chief executive of BASC and a vice chairman of FACE, the European umbrella organisation for shooting and conservation, said: “BASC has been working with British MEPs and other UK and European shooting organisations to ensure that Commission proposals to combat terrorism and organised crime do not damage legitimate shooting.

“Many people who shoot have written to their MEPs to raise their concerns about the Commission’s proposals. I know that British MEPs are keen to protect the lawful interests of their constituents. BASC wished to assist by summarising in an easily accessible way the risk of unintended consequences. We will continue our work with our MEPs as the Commission reviews its proposals and MEPs table amendments for votes which are likely in June.”
