BASC has collaborated with the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to train volunteers to improve the recording of bird ringing and nest recording activities.
BTO members and volunteers from north Wales, Cheshire, Shropshire and Manchester travelled to BASC’s head office to learn about the BTO’s new online data collection system – Demography Online.
Kelvin Jones, BTO’s development co-ordinator for Wales, said: “Demography Online, or DemOn, is being developed to meet the needs of volunteers who gather this vital information so the BTO can efficiently use it alongside other bird and wildlife data. It was great to be able to meet at BASC’s offices again and the evening was really useful for everyone involved.”
Ian Danby, BASC’s head of biodiversity projects and a BTO volunteer, said: “I was impressed by the energy and care of everyone for getting their data into this new system, in some cases many thousands of records that can be used to inform conservation knowledge.
“Recording is a core principle of conservation and BASC members can collect biodiversity data on land used for shooting through our Green Shoots Mapping website.
“Supporting BTO’s or BASC’s recording activities is vital for the conservation of species and habitats for future generations.”
