BASC to appoint team of political officers

BASC is looking to recruit five political officers to make links between sporting shooters and MPs in a bid to inform and influence them ahead of a possible snap general election and the planned general election in 2022.

Christopher Graffius, BASC’s executive director of communications and public affairs, said: “BASC Council determined at the end of last year that shooting is facing significant political risks.

“In particular, if there is a snap general election we face the possibility of a government with an anti-shooting agenda being elected. That possibility also exists for the planned date of the general election in 2022.”

Martyn Jones, a member of BASC Council, chairman of BASC’s political committee and former Labour MP said: “Council determined that we should launch a new political campaign focused on making links between BASC members, clubs and syndicates and their local MPs, parliamentary candidates and opinion formers with the aim of giving MPs strong local reasons to support shooting and a thorough understanding of the issues involved.

“BASC will be appointing up to five new members of staff as political officers based in the countries and regions to accomplish this. We hope to have them in place by Easter.”
