Thousands of copies of a booklet designed to raise awareness of poaching and how to deal with it are being sent out by the UK’s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC). The booklet, published by BASC, will be sent to police officers, gamekeepers and others who may be affected by poaching.
“The Poaching of Game, Deer and Fish”, now in its fourth edition, contains information on the law and provides advice on types of poaching, offences associated with poaching and how to gather evidence.
5,000 copies of the booklet have already been requested, primarily by police forces across the UK.
Glynn Evans, BASC’s head of game and gamekeeping, said: “Poaching is a serious criminal activity. The people who take part it in it have no regard for the animals they target and are often prepared to use intimidation or violence. Poachers are also likely to be involved in other rural crimes against people and property.
“This booklet provides essential information and advice for law enforcers, gamekeepers, farmers and others affected by poaching. Working in partnership on a national basis as part of Project Trespass, BASC aims to increase awareness of poaching and associated crimes and to help action to be taken to stop them.”
The booklet can be downloaded here. It is also available as a pocket-sized booklet to BASC members and law enforcers. A copy can be obtained by contacting the BASC game and gamekeeping department on 01244 573019 or gamekeeping@0ld.basc.org.uk.
