BASC project earns European acclaim

A CASE-STUDY from BASC’s Green Shoots biodiversity programme has featured in the latest FACE manifesto.

The Federation of Associations for Hunting and Conservation of the EU selected BASC’s long-standing work in Cheshire to highlight landscape-scale conservation.

BASC’s nationwide Green Shoots programmes collect wildlife information from members to inform conservation knowledge and develop collaborative projects.

In turn, the FACE manifesto reflects conservation efforts made in Europe ensure the sustainability of hunting and shooting for future generations.

Ian Danby, BASC’s head of biodiversity, said: “We are delighted to support FACE in better recognising the value of shooting across Europe.

“It is also particularly pleasing that a case study from our Green Shoots programme is featured. We worked with a wide range of conservation partners, shoots and local landowners to create a 32km linked network of habitat to benefit species, such as the dormouse, to expand and move in response to climate change.”

Charlotte Simon, FACE nature policy officer, said: “Despite the fact hunters do a lot for nature conservation throughout Europe, it is sometimes difficult to demonstrate that work.

“Concrete figures are therefore needed. Quantifying what hunters and their organisations do for biodiversity is essential to co-ordinate more effective actions towards nature conservation throughout Europe.”

The report can be downloaded from the FACE website and the featured project in the UK can be seen here.

FACE launched the Biodiversity Manifesto Working Group in January 2014, made up of experts from national hunting associations from Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
