BASC highlights link between shooting and conservation in national press

deerTHE Daily Mirror newspaper has today published a letter written by BASC director of communications Christopher Graffius.

BASC, the UK’s largest shooting organisation, contacted the Mirror to highlight errors carried in a two-page article in Friday’s paper which failed to make the link between commercial deer stalking and its value to conservation and rural communities.

The original article was also critical of British companies which had a presence at the recent US Safari Club International Conference.

Christopher Graffius said: “Members can be assured that BASC acts quickly to correct misinformation about shooting and the shooting industry whenever it appears. It is important that the wider public, who may have no affinity to shooting, are given all the facts.

“In this case, the link must be made between commercial shooting and the existence of deer in parks across the UK. We have also taken the opportunity to point out that shooting makes a £2 billion contribution to the UK economy each year, with £250 million of that being spent on conservation.”
