This week BASC members are being invited to an open day in Wales about how mink and grey squirrel control can benefit conservation.

Audrey Watson, BASC Green Shoots Wales Officer, will host an informal open day at the Bodfuan Shoot, Gwynedd, on Wednesday (8 July) from 11.30am to 2pm.

The day will include a presentation on work to control invasive species – targeting American mink to benefit water voles and water birds, and grey squirrels to benefit red squirrels.

Those attending will be able to sign up to become part of BASC’s network of trapping volunteers and borrow kit including mink rafts and traps.

Refreshments will be provided and representatives from partner organisations – Natural Resources Wales, CLA, Farmers’ Union Wales, the National Farmers’ Union and local authorities – will also be there to share information and discuss issues and ideas.

Audrey Watson said: “This is an opportunity to find out why we must keep controlling mink and grey squirrels, as well as how shooting and conservation are working hand in hand.”
