BASC has been honoured at the Great British Shooting Awards for its ‘Outstanding Contribution to Conservation.’
The announcement was made at the inaugural awards ceremony which took place during the Great British Shooting Show at the NEC in Birmingham on Saturday.
Caroline Bedell, BASC’s executive director of conservation, said: “We are delighted the efforts of our organisation have been recognised. But BASC works on behalf of its membership, so this award reflects the hard work done by people who shoot.
“BASC is at the forefront of the conservation debate at a national, European and international level. Our work at the highest levels filters down through European and national agreements and legislation and impacts shooters on the ground.
The Great British Shooting Awards are a new showcase for the products, organisations and people involved in shooting.
BASC chairman Peter Glenser QC said: “We are delighted to have been recognised at these awards.
“Sporting shooters have a vested interest in maintaining and enhancing the biodiversity on the land over which they shoot and their practical and often voluntary conservation work often goes unrecognised.
“People who shoot spend 3.9 million work days on conservation – the equivalent of 16,000 full-time jobs. Nearly two million hectares are actively managed for conservation as a result of shooting.
“The nomination and our subsequent success in this category emphasises the importance of the ‘C’ in BASC.”
