A new director for Wales has been appointed by the UK’s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), to promote shooting and support members across the country.

Gary Ashton, a former superintendent with North Wales Police, will take up his post as BASC Wales director in April. He will also be responsible for leading BASC’s Sporting Services department which aims to ensure high standards, deliver training and develop shooting across the UK.

As BASC Wales director Gary will be responsible for developing support and services for BASC members and will manage political and public affairs in support of shooting in Wales.

BASC chief executive Richard Ali said: “Shooting plays a vital role in Wales, contributing to the economy and the well-being of the countryside. Gary’s expertise will enhance the public profile of shooting and improve the service which BASC can provide to its members. We are pleased to welcome him to the BASC team and to our growing organisation.”

Gary said: “I’m excited by the opportunity to work with people who are clearly so passionate about shooting and by the challenge of working to improve the public and political profile of shooting in the Welsh Assembly and beyond. I also look forward to developing the support and benefits for BASC members in Wales. “
