Britain’s largest shooting association – the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) – has condemned proposals to build a tidal barrage across the Wash as a serious threat to the environment.
The Wash is an internationally designated site and is an important habitat for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds. Wildfowling members of BASC spend many hours protecting and improving the habitat to ensure the presence of sustainable populations of waders and waterfowl.
Chairman of the Wash Wildfowlers Joint Council, Ian Branford, said: “This idea was investigated in the 1970s and was rejected. We believe this project, if it went ahead would have a catastrophic effect, causing widespread flooding on the North Norfolk coast and wipe out what is Britain’s largest National Nature Reserve”.
