On a rather cold and grey day 38 ladies met at the wonderful Colquite Estate, Bodmin , by kind permission of Countess Pinky Le Grelle and her family, to take part in Cornwall Lady Guns’ ‘Give it a Go’ day. The event was kindly sponsored by Ian Hodge Ltd, Cornish Mutual Assurance Ltd, CPC Group and Eley Cartridges.
After a safety briefing, the women were split into five groups, each assigned an instructor (Stewart Lees – BASC senior shotgun coach, Gary Fox – Associate of the Association of Professional Shooting Instructors, Glynn Abbott – member of APSI, Albert Sloman – CPSA coach and Simon Ede of North Cornwall Shooting Ground, who all gave the time generously). The groups headed out to the Paddock where everyone had a go at shooting five clays on each target; for some this was their first time shooting.
The Ladies were very appreciative of Pinky Le Grelle’s presence during the morning offering words of encouragement and praise and after two hours we all headed back to the warmth of the shoot room for a well-earned glass of Champagne, tea and cakes and to share in the enjoyment and enthusiasm.
We were also joined for the day by David Gervers, BASC South West England regional director.
Leeza Williams, Chair of Cornwall Lady Guns commented; “A lot of women have thought about taking up shooting and today we were able to offer them a go and just see how captivating it is. Being an all-lady group we offer encouragement and commiserate with one another as only women can!”
A raffle was held to raise funds for the Headland Unit chemotherapy suite at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Prizes were kindly donated by Eley Hawk Ltd, BASC SW, Taste of Game, GDK Trading, Helluva Pasty, Fozy Originals, Countess Le Grelle and North Cornwall Shooting Ground. A total of £275 was raised.
Cornwall Lady Guns was established back in September 2012 with the help of BASC South West. It was one of the first such clubs in Great Britain and comprises a group of ladies who come together once a month on a Friday to socialise and clay shoot, meeting at various venues throughout Cornwall. We welcome all shooting abilities, whether you just want to have a go or are looking to improve your skills, it is great fun and a good way to socialise.
