Cornwall Young Shots day – 26th May

Nearly 30 enthusiastic Young Shots enjoyed the hot sunny weather at Little Ellenglaze Farm, Nr Newquay on the 26th May when they attended the BASC / Cornwall Wildfowlers Introduction to Country Sports day.

The action packed event gave the youngsters, aged between 8 and 16, an opportunity to try a number of different country related activities including: – clay shooting, air rifles, gundogs, ferreting, pigeon decoying and wildfowling.  As an extra spectacle Clark Frost and Jason Bayly took to the water in a traditional duck punt and fired a test shot from Clarks big old punt gun.  Everyone was amazed by the size of the gun, the enormous bang and the unbelievable amount of smoke!

Many of the youngsters had never tried clay shooting before, yet under the tuition from the BASC coaches they shot extremely well and all of them successfully broke a few targets.

The air rifle competition was actually won by a young girl who had never even fired an air rifle before – which provided plenty of amusement with the brother and sister rivalry that followed. Was it beginners luck or a natural ability? We wish her all the best and hope she carries on shooting to find out!

Big thank you’s must go to Adam Coad who generously opened up his farm to us and allowed the event to take place in such splendid surroundings,  and especially to the Cornwall Wildfowlers for all their hard work in helping to organise, set up and run such an excellent event.

If you missed out on attending this day but would be interested in any future events keep an eye on the South West pages of the BASC website or contact the South West office direct for more details.
