BASC is reviewing a national report on how the UK has managed nature conservation under the terms of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. The report was drafted by the UK government’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee. A consultation on the report closes on 4th February.

Convention on Biological Diversity
Biodiversity policy at a global level is guided by the Convention on Biological Diversity, the most important international convention in the field of nature conservation. The Convention has 193 signatories including the EU and the UK and it influences national biodiversity strategies and action plans.

UK report
The UK report follows the structure proposed in the guidance from the Convention secretariat and provides answers to the following nine questions:
- Why is biodiversity important for your country?
- What major changes have taken place in the status and trends of biodiversity in your country?
- What are the main threats to biodiversity?
- What are the impacts of the changes in biodiversity for ecosystem services and the socio-economic and cultural implications of these impacts?
- What are the biodiversity targets set by your country?
- How has your national biodiversity strategy and action plan been updated to incorporate these targets and to serve as an effective instrument to mainstream biodiversity?
- What actions has your country taken to implement the Convention since the fourth report and what have been the outcomes of these actions?
- How effectively has biodiversity been mainstreamed into relevant sectoral and cross-sectoral strategies, plans and programmes?
- How fully has your national biodiversity strategy and action plan been implemented?
