Record your shooting and protect your sport with the BASC iGamebook app

igamebook for webiPhone and iPad users can download a new app and help to protect the future of shooting by demonstrating its sustainability with important data from bag returns.

The BASC iGamebook app is part of the BASC Gamebook programme and allows users to record the details of a day’s shooting securely and confidentially. The data collected will be used in an anonymous survey to identify trends and changes in the numbers of all quarry species shot from year to year. The app also offers a range of features that can be personalised by the user. The app is available on iTunes Apps Store or via www.igamebook.co.uk

The BASC Gamebook programme complements the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s (GWCT) National Gamebag Census (NGC). The BASC survey collects anonymous information from people who shoot and the GWCT’s NGC survey collects data from shoots and estates. Together, these two voluntary surveys provide good coverage of UK shooting bags. Data for the BASC survey can also be recorded via the internet or on a standard spreadsheet, both free of charge and available from www.bascgamebook.org.uk.

Kate Ives of BASC’s research department said: “For more than 70 years the GWCT’s National Gamebag Census has provided unique insight into how wildlife populations change in response to land management as well as changes in shooting itself. The BASC Gamebook will also help to identify trends and ultimately help us protect your shooting so if you can help by taking part, please do. Many EU states have a mandatory requirement to record quarry data. The UK schemes are voluntary and the data they collect is enormously valuable in demonstrating the sustainability and responsibility of UK shooting. By using the online BASC Gamebook or the iGamebook, you can keep records of your shooting and at the same time know that you’re helping to protect your sport.”
