The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) has told the Commission on Scottish Devolution that devolving responsibility for firearms legislation would be detrimental for legitimate gun ownership.
BASC’s full response to the consultation on ‘The Future of Scottish Devolution within the Union’ can be viewed through this link:
The consultation includes a question about the implications of devolving responsibility for firearms and what cross-border issues might arise from different policies.
BASC’s director for Scotland, Dr Colin Shedden, said: “BASC has a clear policy on firearms controls. This is an overarching aim for a single UK wide jurisdiction for firearms control and we reject the notion that devolving firearms control would benefit public safety. Such a move is likely to be highly detrimental for legitimate firearms ownership, whether for sporting shooting, target shooting or heritage preservation.”
