BASC advice on transporting gundogs in hot weather

BASC has issued advice on how to transport gundogs in hot weather following the death of two German shepherd police dogs in Nottinghamshire this week.

The animals were found dead in a private vehicle outside Nottinghamshire Police’s headquarters on Tuesday.

David Ilsley, who is a member of BASC’s gundog advisory committee, said: “You should always ask yourself if taking your dogs on the journey is absolutely necessary. Leaving car windows slightly open is not enough to ensure your dogs will be okay in hot weather. They need to be taken out of the car and left in a secure, cool place with access to water and shade.”

BASC also recommends that people plan any car journey in advance ensuring their dogs have enough shade whilst travelling and that a supply of cold water is available. The police or someone in authority should always be called if anyone ever sees a dog suffering in a car.
