BASC appoints new head of deer management

Former Sparsholt College lecturer Martin Edwards has been appointed BASC’s head of deer management.

Martin Edwards spent 33 years at the college, teaching game and wildlife management then progressed to become head of the college’s fish, game and countryside management section.

The grandson of a gamekeeper, Martin been deer stalking for over 30 years. He has also been involved in training and assessing DSC1 courses and mentoring and assessing new stalkers for their DSC2.

Martin said he was looking forward to getting more people involved in shooting sports.

“My grandfather was a gamekeeper, that’s where my love of shooting comes from,” he said.

“I think it’s hugely important to get more people involved in deer management. The deer stalking schemes that BASC runs provide a great opportunity for people to develop their skills.”

Paul Williamson, BASC’s head of land management, said: “We are delighted to have appointed Martin Edwards.

“He has significant experience in deer-related matters, having previously been a curriculum lead at Sparsholt College and a board member of Deer Management Qualifications.

“Martin will be responsible for developing BASC’s policies for deer population management across the UK and carrying forward a programme of activities to bring the policies to life.”

“Martin’s wealth of experience and commitment to training and qualifications will ensure that BASC are at the forefront of improving standards in deer management and stalking.’
