A TEAM of BASC staff will scale the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
The eight-strong team will take on the sponsored challenge in June after a colleague was diagnosed with the disease. They will start by scaling Ben Nevis, move on to Scafell and finish on Snowdon and plan to raise £10,000.
Team spokesperson Sarah East said: “Every week in the UK, 35 people are diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND).
“In that same week, another 35 people will die of the disease. Average life expectancy from diagnosis is two years. Everyone thinks of Professor Stephen Hawking surviving for many years with the disease, but he is the rare exception not the rule.
“When one of your colleagues is diagnosed with MND, it’s easy to feel totally helpless. But the MNDA provides exceptional support. It funds vital research into treatments and hopes, like all of us, that eventually a cure can be found.
“To support the charity’s good work we are embarking upon a sponsored National Three Peaks Challenge; climbing the highest Peaks of Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours – literally rising to the challenge!”
Members of the team will be spending the weeks in the run-up to the event undertaking training hikes and securing sponsorship. BASC has provided accommodation and transport support.
