BASC looking forward to working with new Natural England chair

BASC is seeking a meeting with the new chair of Natural England to emphasise how sustainable shooting can enhance the environment.

Tony Juniper CBE was this week confirmed as chair of Natural England by Environment Secretary Michael Gove.

BASC’s executive director of conservation Caroline Bedell said she was looking forward to working with Mr Juniper and would be inviting him to a shoot to meet the people involved and see the extensive conservation work that is carried out.

She said: “The relationship between Natural England and BASC is an important one. Only last year we renewed our long-term agreement with Natural England. The agreement commits both organisations to a relationship that acknowledges the positive contribution of shooting to the well-being of participants, the environment and local economies across England.”

“Sustainable shooting cannot exist without the conservation efforts of the people who carry out essential environmental work in their own time without any desire for remuneration.”

“It can truly enhance the environment in a number of ways, not least of which is the promotion of habitat and increased biodiversity. We are keen to show Mr Juniper how shooting sports contribute to the environment and provide nutritious food.”
