Shooting sports could be key to tackling loneliness and isolation

BASC has told the Welsh Government that shooting sports could help alleviate loneliness and social isolation.

The Welsh Government called on people to share their ideas on how it can help people in Wales be less lonely and socially isolated as part of a consultation into the issue.

BASC’s 2016 report The Personal Value of Shooting found that 95% of respondents believed shooting was important to their personal wellbeing while a further 84% said it was important for their physical wellbeing.

97% of respondents also revealed they regularly mixed with at least one person due to their shooting activity.

The research also found that the average number of people that participants mixed with as a result of shooting was 23, while the average number of friends made purely through involvement in shooting activity was 20.

BASC Wales director Steve Griffiths said: “Shooting and conservation are open and inclusive to all. Shooting sports provide people living in remote parts of Wales with a great opportunity to come together to enjoy shared pursuits in the beautiful Welsh countryside.

Shooting makes it easy to meet people from all walks of life and spending time with like-minded people through shooting, work days or social events helps foster lifelong friendships.”
