YS Introductory Day Windsor Great Park

Our first Young Shots ‘Introductory Day’ of the year was held at Windsor Great Park, by kind permission of the Crown Estate and the game department.

Her Majesty’s Head Keeper, Mr Peter Clayton kindly agreed to start the day with a short talk about the history of the Great Park, and the management of the shoot.

Following on from this, everyone was then divided into four groups with all attendee’s trying their hand at a range of traditional country pursuits.

Mrs Gwen Butcher and Mr Roger Wade of the ‘Utility Gundog Society’ were on hand with their Labrador retrievers, and allowed everyone to have a go at handling a gundog onto cold game. Whilst Sam Edwards, BASC’s political affairs officer and passionate fly fisher gave instructions to all on the art of casting a fly.

As always, both the clay pigeon shooting and air rifle target shooting went down well, with some very impressive shooting from our ‘Young Shots’.

Our sincere thanks must go to both Gwen and Roger for giving up their time and for bringing along their canine companions. Also to BASC stalwart, Alan Wey for once again assisting Dan Reynolds with the air rifle range.

Justin Clarke, South East regional officer commented “The day was a tremendous success and we have received many emails and telephone calls since the event from the parents and guardians of those that took part saying how much everyone enjoyed themselves. The day would have not been possible without the support of all concerned. Once again I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to the Crown Estate for allowing us to use this most prestigious of settings as our venue. My particular thanks go to Peter Clayton for the support that he and his team gave, both before and during the day”.

Our next young shots ‘Introductory Day’ will be held at Plumpton College on 25th July. Please visit the regional diary page for further details, or contact the regional office on 01306 631378.
