BASC highlights benefits of grouse shooting to the BBC

BASC has highlighted the benefits of grouse shooting in a live radio interview today.

BASC North director Duncan Thomas told BBC Radio Leeds listeners that shooting sports were a “great leveller” and something anyone can get involved in.

He described the different roles on a shoot day and spoke about the “massive amount” of conservation shooting sports on grouse moors supports.

He said: “It’s a great day out with people from all sorts of backgrounds. You never know who you’re going to be shooting or beating or picking up or working your dogs with. Anything from bricklayer to barrister is the expression that we use.”

He also explained that some sensitive species would be in “terminal decline” if it wasn’t for the conservation efforts of gamekeepers and told listeners about the benefits grouse shooting brings to isolated rural communities and economies.

Mr Thomas added: “There’s far more to grouse shooting than would initially meet the eye… It’s sport for all.”

Today’s interview follows an interview Duncan Thomas gave on BBC Radio Lancashire on Monday.
