WHT loan helps wildfowling club buy new land

The Wildlife Habitat Trust (WHT) has given Norwich and District Wildfowlers Association (NDWA) a £30,000 loan to buy new land for the club.

The purchase of 18.11 acres, which includes 1.7km of river frontage and ponds on the River Bure near Stokesby, Norfolk, will allow the club to carry out conservation work and manage shooting opportunities.

Club secretary Richard Moore said: “We are extremely grateful to the WHT for this loan. This has enabled us, along with our own savings, to keep Norwich Wildfowlers moving forward. The river runs right through other land where we rent sporting rights, and will make us a stronger advocate for responsible wildfowling.

“As we now own this land, it gives us more scope to carry out the conservation work we want, and to make improvements for our sporting endeavours also. I would also like to thank BASC for their help in every stage of this purchase.”

Paul Williamson, BASC’s rural land development manager, said: “Norwich and District Wildfowlers Association were the very first recipient of a loan from the WHT back in 1987 when they purchased 16 acres of marshland. The WHT was thrilled to support the club again. It was evident from the applicant that the club has a proud tradition in conservation and has an enthusiastic and diverse membership.”

The WHT is dedicated to raising and distributing funds to help with the acquisition of land for conservation and shooting. It was established in 1986 by members of the UK’s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC).
