BASC has welcomed the fact that farming and the environment have been identified as priorities in the Queen’s Speech.
The Government will introduce an Agriculture Bill to Parliament after it was confirmed in the Queen’s Speech today. The Bill will form a key part of the Government’s Brexit agenda.
Tim Russell, BASC’s director of conservation, said: “It is pleasing to see agriculture and the environment mentioned in the Queen’s speech. BASC would welcome a strong and successful farming sector with effective measures to protect the environment.
“People who shoot have an important part to play in the delivery of good habitats and the wildlife they support. BASC will work to ensure new agri-environment schemes are compatible with shooting wherever appropriate.”
Robin Marshall-Ball, a member of BASC Council and conservation specialist, said: “People who shoot care strongly for the sustainable environment and they also rely on farmers for their shooting. Shooters therefore want to see a countryside where farming is supported after leaving the EU. It is also important to people who shoot that farmers have access to effective measures to protect the environment.”
