BASC’s specialist firearms team dealt with more than 910 telephone calls for help from members during October, with numbers up more than 60 per cent on the same month last year.
This follows on from a September which proved to be their busiest month ever as they gave advice to more than 970 callers.
BASC boasts the UK’s only full-time firearms team, with its six staff providing expert help and advice to a membership of more than 145,000 on all aspects of firearms ownership including technical, legal, practical or forensic.
The team also offers confidential advice based on settled law or sustainable legal opinion and can assist with accessing services available through BASC’s legal expenses insurance.
Bill Harriman, BASC director of firearms, said: “The calls we receive from members are about a variety of topics, but the dramatic rise in recent calls has been down largely to delays in dealing with grants or renewals of certificates as well as problems with the involvement of GPs in the licensing process. These problems are not confined to any specific region but are occurring in ever increasing numbers.”
Peter Glenser, BASC chairman and a barrister specialising in firearms law, said: “Our firearms team provide a service not replicated by any other shooting or country organisation and is a unique benefit available to all of our members.”
