BASC welcomes steps taken by Essex Police to reduce licence backlog

twitter logoBASC has pledged to continue working with Essex Police to reduce the time taken to process firearms licence applications and renewals.

BASC joined other organisations for a meeting chaired by Essex Deputy Chief Constable Matt Horne this week to discuss a rise in complaints about the force’s performance.

Gary Ashton, BASC’s director of firearms operations, said: “The delays experienced by certificate holders in Essex have been unacceptable and this was acknowledged by DCC Horne.

“I am satisfied that Essex Police understand the frustration amongst certificate holders and the impact it has on people’s legitimate business interests and are now putting in place more proportionate processes to improve their turnaround times. We will continue to monitor progress and will meet again later in the year.”

BASC welcomes the efforts taken by Essex Police recently to reduce the backlog by adopting the best practices of other forces, which includes the introduction of a postal renewal service.

DCC Horne said: “This was a really constructive meeting, where we were able to discuss the very real concerns law abiding members of the shooting community have with the current process of applying and renewing their firearm and shotgun certificates.

“We have made some significant changes recently, taking on board some of the helpful suggestions, and best practice from forces around the country. I am confident that we will see an improvement which balances the rights of people to lawfully possess guns with the need to ensure the safety of all.

“We have agreed to meet again in six months to review the impact these changes have made. I am really grateful to all who took the time to meet.”
