Women shooters ready for Olympic breakthrough

Amber HillBritain’s Olympic shooting team could make history by claiming its first ever medal in a women’s shooting event at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

In congratulating Amber Hill, Jennifer McIntosh and Elena Allen for their selection, which has just been announced, Britain’s biggest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, points out that no British woman has won an Olympic medal for shooting in 110 years

But the Rio team could change all that. Amber is the youngest competitor ever to win a World Cup gold medal for skeet shooting while Elena took the silver medal in the World Championships in 2014. Jennifer finished fourth in the European Championships women’s 50m air rifle three position event. Together they present a powerful challenge in a sport where Britain usually excels. Since 1896 GB has failed to win an Olympic shooting medal on only three occasions.

The men’s team presents an equally strong challenge. In the double trap we have current world record holder Tim Kneale and World Cup gold Steve Scott, while single trap shooter Ed Ling is a former world and European junior champion.

BASC chief executive, Richard Ali, Said; “We congratulate the six members of Team GB’s shooting squad. Everyone remembers Pete Wilson’s brilliant performance at the London Olympics It would be a great boost to our sport if our men could follow in his footsteps and if Amber, Jennifer and Elena could be the first of our women shooters to win medals.”
