Wildfowlers use £4,000 to buy sporting rights on Lough Foyle foreshore

ballykelly marsh 008The Wildlife Habitat Trust (WHT) has granted a loan of £4,000 to the Lough Foyle Wildfowlers Association towards the purchase of the sporting rights over 22 acres of land on Lough Foyle foreshore at Townland of Walworth.

The purchase by the Lough Foyle Wildfowlers Association will help to protect the club’s shooting opportunities and provide access to other shooting areas.

Club chairman Terry Young said: “This has been a long and protracted transaction. Although a relatively small acreage, it was none the less vitally important because of its location. Being at the end of an access road it provides unhindered access to other areas controlled by LFWA and ensures our sport will continue and flourish. Thanks to the hard work and persistence of ourselves aided by the WHT and BASC and especially Laura Morrison at the Lisburn office we have overcome the problems and achieved a great result.”

Tim Russell, WHT secretary and director of conservation at BASC, said: “I am delighted that the WHT is helping the Lough Foyle Wildfowlers Association buy these shooting rights, they will strengthen the club’s position on Lough Foyle and the shooting will benefit club members for many years to come. The WHT is always willing to help wildfowling clubs buy land for shooting and conservation.”
