Young Shots learn about deer management in the New Forest

Young shots in the south east have been learning about deer management in the New Forest from its keepers this week.

The BASC Young Shots Deer Management Day was organised by keeper Maarten Ledeboer to raise awareness of the management issues they face in the New Forest due to its large deer population.

The Young Shots studied the history of the forest with keeper Graham Wilson, tracked deer in the forest with keepers Ian Young and Maarten Ledeboer, looked at the zeroing target area used by the keepers and visited the New Forest Deer Larder with Head Keeper Andy Paige.

BASC regional officer for the south east, Jenni Thompson, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for Young Shots to study deer management from forest to table. Several of our Young Shots want to become gamekeepers and I think their experiences on the day will have inspired them to go out and learn more about their surroundings in order to achieve that dream.”
