Young shots from the South East have been learning about deer management from the Forestry Commission’s New Forest keepers this week.
The Young Shots met keeper Graham Wilson in Verderer’s Court to learn about the history of the forest before visiting a deer hide where they saw a herd of over 40 fallow deer and several red hinds with keepers Maarten Ledeboer and Ian Young. Young Shots also got to see the tallest trees in the forest and visited the rifle range and deer larder with guidance from head keeper Andy Page.
BASC regional officer for the south east, Jenni Thompson, said: “This was a brilliant day out for the Young Shots. Not only did they learn about the management of deer, they learnt about the practicalities of doing so as well by using the clues left around them to find out about the deer, about the monitoring of the deer and the management of deer populations for the maintenance of the forest as a whole.”
