Shooting on part of The Wash has been secured for 15 years with help from the UK’s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC).
South Lincolnshire Wildfowlers Club has renewed its sporting rights lease on 529 acres (214 hectares) of Crown Estate foreshore on the River Welland, The Wash.
Natural England has given consent for wildfowling to continue on the site for a period of 15 years.
The club has held the lease since 1991. The area has both national and international protection. The site falls within The Wash Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Protection Area, Marine Special Area of Conservation and is an internationally recognised Ramsar site.
Mark Greenhough, BASC’s wildfowling officer, said: “A lot of wildfowling takes place on areas of special designation and protection. It shows how sustainably managed shooting can fit in with conservation objectives.”
John Loveday, chairman of South Lincolnshire Wildfowlers Club, said: "The renewal of this shooting lease for the next 15 years has come after detailed discussions with Natural England and the RSPB. The club would like to thank all those involved with the lease renewal, especially BASC. In addition to this agreement, the club has also recently renewed 15 year shooting leases on approximately nine miles of coastal wildfowling on North Shore marshes located between Boston & Wrangle."
