The Alde & Ore Wildfowlers Association (AOWA) will be able to start work on a new pond management project next month thanks to a Wildlife Habitat Trust loan.
The project site in Suffolk is part of the Aldeburgh Town Marshes complex and comprises of three ponds, two of which have largely silted up and require restoration to return them to open water. The aim for the whole site is to improve the breeding success for wildfowl and waders. The AOWA will undertake the management of the site, including pest control and litter clearance.
The WHT has presented the club with a cheque for £9568 and the AOWA will also contribute a further £1,500 from its own funds.
The AOWA has held and an annual sporting licence over the ponds and the adjacent Aldeburgh Town Marsh for many years, but has now negotiated a ten year lease over the entire site. In addition, it holds a sporting lease from the Crown Estate on the adjacent Alde–Ore estuary system.
