Northern Ireland’s Environment Minister, Edwin Poots, and Jim Shannon MP have helped the UK’s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), mark National Taste of Game Fortnight 2010 by presenting braces of pheasant to two of the Province’s top chefs.
The Tannery in Moira and The Cuan in Strangford are two of a number of restaurants hosting special game evenings as part of BASC’s National Taste of Game Fortnight, which was launched on 6th November and will run until 20th November.
National Taste of Game Fortnight is part of BASC’s ongoing Game’s On initiative which encourages people to enjoy eating game.
Minister Poots, along with BASC Northern Ireland’s Tommy Mayne, presented a brace of pheasant to Derek Patterson, owner of the Tannery restaurant, Moira. Derek and his brother William Patterson, owner of The Pheasant restaurant in Annahilt, have been hugely supportive of BASC and in particular Game’s On.
Strangford MP Jim Shannon, BASC’s Tommy Mayne and chairman of BASC’s gamekeepers’ advisory committee Robert Crofts visited The Cuan in Strangford and presented a brace of pheasant to chef / owner Peter McErlean and his wife Caroline.
Tommy Mayne said: “Game meat is great. It is delicious, versatile, affordable and it can be locally sourced. We hope that by working with these top quality restaurants, we will encourage more people to enjoy local game. Our thanks are due to Derek and William Patterson and to Peter and Caroline McErlean for their continued support and enthusiasm for Game’s On."
A special game menu will be available at The Wildfowler Inn, Greyabbey, until 17th November. BASC members who present their BASC membership card will be given a 10 per cent discount off food. For more information, visit www.wildfowlerinn.co.uk
