There will plenty of opportunities for food lovers to enjoy British game meat during National Taste of Game Week this November.
There will be events happening across the UK including game tastings in London’s famous Borough Market and a night with Clarissa Dickson-Wright in Skipton. People will also be able to win top chefs for the night as well as meals in restaurants, hampers and places on game cookery courses.
Top chefs Valentine Warner, Clarissa Dickson-Wright, Mike Robinson, Mark Edwards, Jose Souto, Rob Owen and Mark Gilchrist have all lent their support to the campaign which aims to encourage more people to eat game.
EVENTS
13 November: A game dinner will be held at The Craven Arms and Cruck Barn, Appletreewick in Skipton. This will be a truly memorable evening with dinner served in a gas-lit cruck barn. Clarissa Dickson-Wright will be the special guest speaker. The dinner includes hot punch on arrival and a fantastic game menu with Yorkshire grouse. Tickets are £45 per person.
14 November: An Advanced Game Cookery course will be held at the Mike Robinson Game and Wild Food Cookery School, Frilsham from 10am–4.30pm at a cost of £235 per person. The Advanced Game Cookery Course is tailored for those with a good knowledge of the field. This course is the next step after the Essential Game Course and the day is spent concentrating on advanced butchery, technical stocks and sauces, searing and roasting. Recipes covered may well include roast partridge with game chips, saddle of rabbit wrapped in Parma ham or potted venison and game terrine. After a combination of demonstrations by Mike Robinson and hands-on cooking, the day ends with a long, leisurely lunch enjoying the food prepared by the group over the course of the day.
17 November: Hook Norton brewery will be running their game tasting evening and brewery tour. More details will follow.
17-19 November: Martin Wishart’s renowned cookery school in Edinburgh will be promoting game through their recreational cookery classes, where people can learn a blend of contemporary and classical game cooking techniques in small class sizes (8 per class) where they will share Martin’s knowledge on a personal level in an enjoyable and challenging environment. These special game cookery classes will take place on Tuesday 17 November and Thursday 19 November between 9.30am–3.30pm. The cost is £140 per person.
The cookery school is also running a demonstration evening on 18 November when the chefs will demonstrate game dishes for clients to taste, allowing them to take the recipes home to recreate. This demonstration evening starts at 6.30pm with a complementary glass of wine and canapés. The demonstration starts at 7pm and finishes around 9.00pm and costs £35 per person.
19–21 November: There will be a unique game tasting event over three days at Borough Market in London. Mark Gilchrist (19th/21st) and Mike Robinson (20th) will be providing game tastings from 12 noon to 2pm each day. This event is being sponsored by Chefs On Stage. Chefs On Stage are part of the Corporate Group, who provide cookery theatres for the ever increasing number of UK food and drink events across the UK.
20 November: There will be a game dinner held at the University of Derby in Buxton with a 3 course game meal prepared, cooked and served by the catering students under the guidance of Head Chef with a mouth-watering menu of: local game terrine with sour dough toast and fig chutney followed by loin of Lime Park venison with a shallot tart tattin, creamed leeks and cabbage and thyme jus finished off with a soft baked meringue with poached winter fruits and clotted cream.
